History

Thorneside covers an area of just over 3 sq km on Waterloo Bay, 17 kilometres east of the CBD. The traditional owners of the area are the Quandamooka First Nations people.

Much of the land in and around the Mooroondu Point and what is now Thorneside was opened up for agriculture and horticulture shortly after the closure of the Moreton Bay penal settlement in 1842. It remained a predominantly rural area for many decades, supplying Brisbane with fresh local produce. A 1912 land sale poster for the Thorne Estate in fact advertises ’60 small farms and 160 seaside township blocks’ for sale.

As for the name – British settler William Thorne started purchasing land on Mooroondu Point in 1880 and built a house there. His property eventually became known as the ‘Thorne Estate’. When the local railway station opened in 1889, it was also called Thorne Siding. This eventually morphed into Thorneside and became the name of the suburb. Much of the Thorne Estate was auctioned off in the early 1900’s.

Transport Options for Residents

Commuting into the CBD for work, entertainment, or shopping is relatively straightforward with both Old Cleveland Road and State Route 43 providing direct access. Travel time ranges from 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Locally, major thoroughfare Quarry Road runs along the southern edge of Thorneside and links up with Birkdale Road. The TransLink Cleveland – Brisbane City – Cleveland Line (railway) lies adjacent to Quarry Road. The local railway station serves as a convenient central hub for commuters needing to get into the CBD.

Housing Styles

Over 60% of Thorneside’s dwellings are standalone houses and around 35% are medium density dwellings (i.e. townhouses, villas, low rise units etc). The remaining 5% are caravans and campers in the local caravan park.

Many of the houses are the original ‘seaside’ cottages and, along with the seclusion, give Thorneside a distinctly ‘small coastal town’ feel. This is despite its proximity to highly developed areas like Manly and Wynnum just to the north.

Renovated Charm

Although an increasing number of the cottages have been, or are being, renovated, their character and charm remains, even with the addition of 2nd storeys! They are in fact an ideal type of rental property for tenant families who want a quiet, friendly, coastal neighbourhood close to quality amenities but without the accompanying urban ‘feel’.

Amenities

Speaking of amenities… cycling and walking paths, waterfront entertainment, plenty of outdoor space, and proximity to cafes, restaurants, and major shopping hubs like Carindale and Capalaba make Thorneside the place to be for family and pet friendly living!

Shopping

Retail hubs Capalaba Central Shopping Centre, Wellington Point Market Hall, Westfield Carindale, and Victoria Point Shopping Centre are only a convenient few minute’s drive away.

Dining

Thorneside does boast its own local fish and chip shop, takeaway coffee, and cafe! However, for dining out options, residents typically travel the few minutes it takes to get to Wellington Point and Birkdale with their wide range of cafes, restaurants, and takeaway outlets.

Healthcare Facilities and Services

There are two alternative health care centres and a retirement village in Thorneside. Birkdale Medical is just a minute or two away. Other convenient medical and healthcare options include:

  • Doctors@WellingtonPoint,
  • Ormiston Medical Centre,
  • Cleveland Medical,
  • Capalaba Medical Centre,
  • One Life Medical, and
  • and Shore Street West Medical Centre.

Parks and Outdoor Facilities

Thorneside may be short on local shops and dining options but it more than makes up for it with recreational and outdoor facilities. There are several parks and playgrounds. And a large sports field in the middle of town with football, netball, cricket, and tennis facilities. A bayside walk / cycle track runs along the esplanade, and is a firm favourite with locals.

Additionally, the entire area adjacent to Tingalpa Creek along the western boundary is designated wetlands, nature reserves, and parks. The tip of Mooroondu Point likewise has retained its native bush.

Schools

There are several excellent private and public schools in or close to Thorneside and a childcare centre. Despite the area’s laid back, historic charm, these schools provide local children with a quality education.

Primary Education

Primary school options for Thorneside children include:

  • the new South East Brisbane Steiner School,
  • Birkdale State School,
  • Birkdale South State School,
  • Wellington Point State School, and
  • the private Redland College.

Secondary Education

For secondary school aged children there is Wellington Point State High School and Redland College.
