History

The name ‘Balmoral’ stands for ‘Beautiful residence’ in Gaelic. It was named after one of its first residents who named it after his birthplace, Scotland. Like many Brisbane suburbs, Balmoral was originally used as farming land. The original pioneers used Balmoral’s land for agriculture and to grow small crops and cotton. Sugar cane was grown in its neighbouring suburb of Bulimba.

Balmoral began to take off as a residential suburb in 1856 when the Norman Creek Bridge was constructed. This eliminated the long route around the Brisbane River that residents had to take, making the suburb more accessible to people and construction materials required.

Amenities

Balmoral is home to a number of shops, such as supermarkets, a post office, salons and coffee shops. There are also plenty of great dining options available in or just a short distance away. One of Balmoral’s more prominent landmarks is the Balmoral Cinema, which opened in 1926 and is great for those avid moviegoers.

Balmoral is also only a short distance from Oxford Street, the main street of Bulimba. Oxford Street is known as an entertainment hub with a number of restaurants, cafes, and bars. There is also a public library just a short distance away, also in the suburb of Bulimba.
