History of the Area

Originally used for dairy farms, a hotel called The Junction opened on Boggo and Ipswich Roads. This created the Annerley Junction which is still a popular shopping location. Prior to being named Annerley, this area was known as Stephens Shire after Thomas Blackett Stephens.

Thomas Blackett Stephens was an English migrant who became a prominent businessman and politician in Brisbane, Queensland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stephens was known for his expertise in mining and engineering and was involved in various civic organizations. He passed away in Brisbane in 1933.

During the housing boom in the 1920’s, a number of Queenslander homes were built. Understandably, the population grew significantly as a result. Being located on Ipswich Rd saw businesses opened and public transport operated early on in the area’s development. Business, transport and development in this area lasts to this very day.

Throughout the years, Annerley has continued to develop and further define its legacy with over 25 heritage-listed properties. (A search of this BCC website is fascinating!)

Public Transport Options Abound

Annerley has a number of public transport options, made possible by its location and history. Along Ipswich Road there are Translink bus routes operated by BCC. Running between Fairfield and the western border of Annerley is the Ferny Grove Line. Train services from here take just 20mins to reach the CBD.

Annerley is a suburb well equipped with stores and other amenities. From the usual Coles and Woolworths grocery stores, to take-away chains such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and KFC, you’ll find what you expect. In addition, there are independent local food stores, so you won’t be short of choice!
