History

Named purely for its location, East Brisbane missed out on a more creative, pretty or poetic names boasted by other nearby suburbs! Reverend Thomas Mowbray was one of the first settlers to arrive and settle in the area. He arrived in 1847 and became known as ‘the father of Presbyterianism’. Rev Mowbray opened Brisbane’s first Presbyterian church in Grey St, South Brisbane in 1851. Mowbray Terrace and Mowbray Park still carry the name of the family, who owned several acres of the land by the Brisbane River.

Also because of the proximity to the Brisbane River, an early business in the area was A. Forsyth and Co Ropeworks. This business was situated on Lytton Rd in 1884. “The Ropeworks” was an important business to the great number of water vessels that used the river to transport all kinds of cargo. Today, Ropeworks Lane is a remnant of the Ropeworks. Do you enjoy this kind of history?
