Ideally situated by the Brisbane River and close to the Story Bridge, the suburb of East Brisbane is only minutes away from the city and Valley. Named purely for its location, East Brisbane missed out on a more creative, pretty or poetic names boasted by other nearby suburbs! Reverend Thomas Mowbray was one of the first settlers to arrive and settle in the area. He arrived in 1847 and became known as ‘the father of Presbyterianism’. Rev Mowbray opened Brisbane’s first Presbyterian church in Grey St, South Brisbane in 1851. Mowbray Terrace and Mowbray Park still carry the name of the family, who owned several acres of the land by the Brisbane River.
Also because of the proximity to the Brisbane River, an early business in the area was A. Forsyth and Co Ropeworks. This business was situated on Lytton Rd in 1884. “The Ropeworks” was an important business to the great number of water vessels that used the river to transport all kinds of cargo. East Brisbane is well represented on the Queensland Heritage Register with several assets in addition to Mowbray Park. This historic park once had its own swimming baths and was the first park in Brisbane to have a World War I memorial. Furthermore, East Brisbane is home to two historic schools. Well established East Brisbane schools include “Churchie” (Anglican Church Grammar School) and the heritage listed East Brisbane State School built in 1898 and opened in 1899.
Housing Style and Demographics
East Brisbane features many examples of typical 19th century houses dating from the 1880s. Other suburbs with similar properties are Paddington, Red Hill and Highgate Hill. Our job in property management East Brisbane means we regularly see these lovely old buildings become available for rent!

In the 2011 Census, slightly more than half of the population of East Brisbane were men and the average age of people was 31.
East Brisbane has great public transport. With a City Cat Ferry Terminal, buses and quick access to the Clem 7 Tunnel, there’s plenty of choice. In addition there is nearby access to the Brisbane Train system.
Stores and Amenities

Marvellous eateries abound. The Spoon Deli Cafe on Lytton St (alongside the IGA) is wonderful. The Banana Leaf Thai Restaurant on Wellington Road comes highly rated.
Other attractions in and around East Brisbane are the parks along Norman Creek, the shopping precinct of Stones Corner and the ‘Gabba, Brisbane’s famous cricket and AFL venue.
