History of Newmarket

Before metrification, Newmarket was located 3 miles from the CBD, hence its original name The Three Mile Scrub. Like most of the country the city now sits on, the land is the traditional home of the Turrbal and Jagera peoples. Around 1880, the Brisbane livestock market was relocated to The Three Mile Scrub, and the name ‘new market’ eventually became the name of the suburb.

Transport Options for Newmarket Residents

Newmarket is connected to the rest of the city via major thoroughfares like Enoggera Road (which runs directly into the CBD) and Newmarket Road. The suburb also has easy access to the Ferny Grove railway line and major bus routes for commutes into the CBD. These transport options ensure Newmarket residents have access to various parts of the city in short time.

This is important because Newmarket is predominantly a residential suburb with few large local employers, meaning most people have to commute to work. It also makes Newmarket an ideal place to consider purchasing a rental investment property.

Housing Styles In Newmarket, Qld

Buyers in the market for a classic Queenslander will find Newmarket is the place to look! There’s usually one among the featured properties for sale across Brisbane. Furthermore, around half the properties in Newmarket are free-standing houses sitting on 600 square metre blocks, which makes them an ideal family rental property acquisition!

Closer to the Newmarket train station are a lot of new unit complexes, and a correspondingly higher population density. These modern dwellings are ideal for commuters, business people, and young couples without children.

Parts of Newmarket in and around Breakfast Creek however are susceptible to flooding so we recommend checking the local City Council Flood Maps to determine where these areas are.
