History

Like many Brisbane suburbs, Hawthorne originated as farming land for animal agriculture and growing crops. In the late 1800’s the land began to be subdivided as Brisbane grew and Hawthorne became its own suburb.

This beautiful Brisbane suburb was named after the bushes that were planted along the land by one of its original settlers.

Housing Style and Demographics

Hawthorne is known for its heritage listed Queenslander style and older brick style houses. There are also a number of newer apartment blocks for those who wish to live in a more modern building.

The majority of residents in Hawthorne are young couples and young families. A smaller percent of mature couples and retirees live in the suburb. There is a largely equal number of male and females in the suburb. This is a ‘young’ suburb where the median age of residents is 33. This median age is four years younger than the national average.

Public Transport

Hawthorne is well serviced by Brisbane public transpor,t with access to a number of bus routes. The close proximity to the Brisbane River also allows for the use of the ferry services such as the CityCat. Hawthorne is also only a short distance from the suburb of Morningside. Morningside has a well serviced train station for those who prefer to travel by rail.

Stores and Amenities

Hawthorne is home to an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafes. Shops include supermarkets, salons, chemists, convenience stores and boutique clothing stores. For those who enjoy the night life, Hawthorne is close to Oxford street in Bulimba, which is known for its restaurants and bars. This friendly suburb is also known for its cinema complex, Hawthorne Cinema.

There are a number of parks and play areas for children. So, Hawthorne is a sought after location for established couples and young families. Although there are only a few schools, they are known as some of the best state schools in Brisbane. It is also within close proximity to a number of neighbouring suburbs that are home to many well known and renowned schools. This makes Hawthorne a great place to live for those families who wish to be close to the city while having access to great schools, shopping centers and healthcare.
